Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF I WILL BE A GOOD FIT FOR YOU?

I am happy to offer prospective clients a 15-minute phone consultation at no charge to explore whether we are a  good fit. It is important to me you feel comfortable with the therapist you select and I want you to have this opportunity to make sure I am a good fit for you.

During the phone consultation we will talk very high level about your reason for seeking services and what you are hoping to achieve in sessions. You will also have time to ask me any questions that will help you decide as to whether you would like to work together.

WHAT DOES IT COST? DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

If you do not have insurance or do not wish to file an insurance claim, my session fees are as follows:

  • Initial Session: $175

  • Additional Sessions: $150

If you wish to use insurance, I am currently in-network with Aetna, United Healthcare, Optum, and Medcost. Insurance plans vary greatly and your exact co-pay will depend on your specific plan.

I make every effort to verify your insurance benefits prior to your first session, but this is not always accurate or achievable. For clients using insurance, I will keep you updated with any changes to co-pays as claims are filed and I receive information from the insurance providers.

It is ultimately your responsibility to know what mental health services are included in your plan and the associated co-pay. If you are interested in equine facilitated psychotherapy, there is an additional session fee of $50 which is in addition to the session fee or insurance co-pay.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT IN THE FIRST SESSION?

The initial session is about gaining a greater understanding of what is going on in your life and causing you to seek services at this time. I will ask some questions about your personal history, as well as your current symptoms and you only have to share what feels comfortable to you in the moment.

I understand it can take time to trust and open up to someone and that is alright. During this first session I also encourage you to ask any further questions you may have about the overall process of therapy.

If you come to my office in Cary, you will get to meet my registered therapy dog, Cricket in the first session.

If you come to the horse farm in Wendell, we will meet in a private office for the first session and you will meet the horses in your next session.

WHAT ARE EQUINE SESSIONS AT THE HORSE FARM LIKE?

For sessions at the horse farm, the plan is to be outside with the horses year-round. If it is raining, the session will take place in one of the covered barns with the horses. There is a heated and air-conditioned lounge area with water, coffee, and snacks. If at any time you feel the need to take a break from the outdoors there is the option to go to the lounge. It is important to wear comfortable clothes, in layers, appropriate to the temperature of the day. Closed toed shoes are a requirement and some form of boot is recommended.

Also, keep in mind since we will be outside it is strongly recommended to apply sunblock and insect repellent in warmer months. I will have extra insect repellent on hand as needed.

An Equine Specialist will be present in any equine sessions. The Equine Specialist is trained and certified to work with a therapist to deliver equine-facilitated psychotherapy sessions. The role of the Equine Specialist is to ensure a safe session environment for both you and the horse to interact and to share horse knowledge as relevant to your goals and objectives in therapy.
